     December 10, 1950, William Faulkner gave his Nobel prize acceptance speech. World war II had just concluded. During this time, the cold war was going on. People's minds were filled with fear. William is afraid that the fear creeping into young authors were going to affect their writing (to foster negative victimhood sentiments). Faulkner persuades the young authors in his audience to write from their heart by referencing his success on the subject, gives excellent example of writing that comes out of heart, and creating a sense of duty to lead the society out of its despair.      First of all, Faulkner establishes his own credibility through his recognition of the Nobel Prize in literature.      Elisabeth Woodbridge Morris wrote an essay called, "The Tyranny of Things." In this essay, Morris talks about the want to possess, "things." She talks about how people's desire wanting to possess things, can usually become a problem; when someone gets something, the more they want. She is able to persuade her audience by exploring relatable situation like friendship and how it is overshadowed by things, using examples of diminished travel experiences, and costly time required for upkeep of things.     Firstly, Morris uses relatable situations to appeal to her audience. In the beginning of her speech, she gives a small anecdote about two girls who become friends because they both like "things." This situation is relatable as it is very common. The audience realize these type of relation ships are very shallow and fragile and wear out easily.  When people like friends for who they are, usually, it is much more interesting and everlasting.   ...

     On June 6th, 1966, Robert F. Kennedy gives a speech to the National Union of South African Students. In his speech , Kennedy talks about how the young African people of a western civilization must fight for equality. Kennedy is able to successfully persuade his audience by appealing to western values,  referencing current successes, and opportunity to an almost finished revolution,      First of all, Kennedy tells his audience about the values of western society. He says that being free and liberal is what sets the west apart from other places such as Nazi Germany and Persia. With this, the audience feels glad that they have it a lot better than others.  Then he talks why those values are under threat; there is call for action.      A plane crashes into a lake. The only survivor is a 15 year old city boy. He is trapped in the middle of a forest thousands of miles away from any sort of civilization. He has no survival skill whatsoever, and has nothing but a hatchet. He has no food, no shelter, or any plan to escape the forest.      When all was lost, the boy solves each one of his problems with what he has. First of all, he gets water from the lake in which the plane crashed into. He feeds off raspberry bushes. He also uses a spear and bow & arrow to catch rabbits. He finds turtle eggs buried in sand. He starts a fire by hitting his hatchet against a flint stone which creates sparks. He uses fire to keep away bugs and predators, and to cook food. He also uses his hatchet to cut down wood.      There once was a town called Tall Town. Most people in the town were tall. The normal height in that town was considered six feet. It was extremely unusual to be shorter than six feet. However, not all people can be tall. Bob was one of those people. Bob looked like everyone else. The only thing that made Bob different from the rest was his height. He was only five feet tall at the age of 18.      Bob was constantly being teased for being shorter than everyone in the town. As a result of being teased, Bob became very depressed. This distracted Bob during his years in college. Thus, Bob had failed his school years in college. He then went on to a job as a mechanic barely making the end's meet. Then, came the day that had changed Bob's life forever. Bob was taking a walk to the park.  Suddenly, he had heard a cry from someone's house. Bob ran over to see what was going on. Another company owned by Jason Bradley is looking for money and fame. 100 years have passed since the great Titanic has sunk. People felt as if their technology was advance enough to overcome the obstacles of raising the Titanic. Problem/Opportunity      Both of the companies saw potential in raising the Titanic. Donald Craig's company looked forward to lifting up the hull of the Titanic. They hoped to fine old artifacts of the forgotten past. Jason Bradley's company saw that raising the rest of the Titanic as an opportunity for earning money. The Invisible Man Summary By: Arjun Agrawal      A man named Griffin had turned himself invisible. To hide the fact that Griffin was invisible, he covered his whole body in clothing. Coming from no where, he moved into an inn at Iping. In Griffin's room he was doing many science experiments. After a day, Griffin runs out of money and decides to rob a store, he does not get caught. The day after the robbery the villagers accused Griffin of robbing the store. Griffin then reveals that he was invisible, beats up the villagers and runs away leaving everything he had behind.      A few days later Griffin comes to find shelter at his old colleague’s house, Kemp. Kemp was scared at first, then Griffin explains his story on how he became invisible due to one of his evil experiments. Kemp complies. After a few days Griffin robs a few stores.
