Eric Klinenberg

In response to the increase in use of air-conditioners, Eric Klinenberg writes the article, "Viewpoint: Air-Conditioning Will Be the End of Us." In this, he persuades his audience to decrease their reliance of AC by first acknowledging the benefits of the AC to build his own credibility. Then he raises awareness of problems arising from rising expectations of AC comfort. Lastly, he emphasizes how the AC is only a temporary solution to comfort.

Firstly, Klinenberg acknowledges the benefits of the AC. He states how it can "help truly vulnerable people.." such as the elderly. He even mentions how the AC helps workplaces become more productive. He does this to build a mutual agreement between himself and his audience.  As a result, the audience is able to relate to Klinenberg, creating a sense of trust. And so, Klinenberg uses this ethos to support him in his fight to decrease reliance on the AC.

Secondly, Klinenberg talks about the problem of rising expectations of the AC. He mentions the problem, of how, "the fastest-growing U.S. cities... have effectively been built on air-conditioning." This culture of using AC, is something that is spreading to other countries countries such as India or China. These countries are very poor. These countries should be focusing on infrastructure and education. Instead, they are wasting their money on AC.

Lastly, Klinenberg emphasizes that the AC is only a temporary comfort that creates a permanent problem. During his concluding statement, he mentions how "blasting the AC will ultimately make us all even hotter." With this, Klinenberg means that using the AC only contributes to global warming which will make everyone By making a room cold for a small period of time, you are making the outside hotter. Since you spend most of your time outside, you will feel more hot overall. This is a powerful realization. Thus leaving a lasting impression. With this, Klinenberg hopes that the audience will realize that the only way to actually avoid the heat is to not use the AC.

In conclusion, Klinenberg convinces his audience to become less reliant on the AC. First he establishes credibility by acknowledging the benefits. Then he raises awareness of the rising expectations in AC. Lastly, he emphasizes how the AC is only a temporary comfort.
