Orlando Huntington

In response to the raised price of a first-class stamp, Orlando Huntington writes the article, "Return to sender." In his article, he addresses the issue of the lack of physical mail communication in society. He tries to persuade his audience preserve hand-writing letters by creating a sense of nostalgia, appealing to loss of expression, and rebutting any counterclaims.

First of all, Huntington creates a sense of nostalgia. He remembers experience of writing lengthy, thoughtful, and articulate physical letters and sending it very fondly. New generation, on the other hand, with short, instant, reactionary texts, will never experience this joy. This reminds audience a sense of loss in society. This loss of experience, is something that Huntington urges his readers not to give up.

Secondly, Huntington appeals to loss of expression. In paragraph three of his article, he recounts writing a letter is an emotional experience. Emotional expression is all over a letter from writing font, style, and even the letters. For example the elongated loops of  y's and g's express deep personal desire. This is impossible with discrete emoji's in texts. These emotions fostered stronger relations with lovers and gratitude to grandma. When emotional expression is lost, relations are diminished. This is a loss for society.

Lastly, Huntington rebuts any counter claim someone may propose. He mentions how other people may argue, "Save a tree. Pay online." However, he strongly rebuts this by saying you can recycle to completely make up for writing letters. With this, Huntington doesn't leave a doubt in his audiences' mind about any cons from handwritten letters.

In conclusion, Huntington is able to persuade his audience to preserve the tradition of writing physical letters. He does this by explaining the emotional meanings behind physical letters and by arguing that there is no harm in writing/sending physical letters.
