The mother's life was not a crystal stair. She had many broken holes and tacks in her stairs. This symbolizes struggle in her life. She says that she never gave up. Eventually, she reached the top of the stairs. Thus she succeeded in life.
The poem Mother to Son is similar and different to the quote by Bill Cosby. They both tell us to reach our goals. No matter what gets in our way we have to keep trying.
