INTRO

The poem "Mother to Son" by Langston Hughes describes a mother providing valuable advice to her son. The main theme of the poem is to never give up hope and to keep pushing forward when life gets challenging.

BODY

Presented throughout the text, the theme of the poem is to hold on to hope. The mother compares her life to stairs. Crystal stairs symbolizes that everything is perfect. The mother's life was not a crystal stair. She had many broken holes and tacks in her stairs. This symbolizes struggle in her life. She says that she never gave up. Eventually, she reached the top of the stairs. Thus she succeeded in life.

The poem Mother to Son is similar and different to the quote by Bill Cosby. They both tell us to reach our goals. No matter what gets in our way we have to keep trying. (Never give up) That is the only way to succeed. They are both different too. The quote tells us to dream big. To take the bigger stairs. The poem does not tell us to dream big. It tells us that whichever stairs we have chosen, to try and finish it.

CONCLUSION
All in all, the poem mother to son and the quote by Bill Cosby, are both trying to express the theme of persisting.
