Dana Gioia

In response to decline in reading comprehension in society according to 2002 article, "Survey of Public Participation in the Arts", Dana Gioia writes the article, "Why Literature Matters." Throughout this article, he uses many different ways to convince his audience to read. Three most persuasive elements are that reading fosters artistic expression, relating readers to business success, and relating to civic success.

First of all, Gioia writes that reading fosters artistic expression. Reading allows "artistic and emotional beauty, to detect patterns and opportunities, to craft a satisfying narrative." Avid readers have a more creative/artistic expression. Creative and artistic expression leads to a happier life. She uses this to motivate them to read.

Secondly, Gioia relates to the reader's business success. He explains how avid readers know a lot more about the society. They argue better. They are much more engaged in civil societies, and therefore they tend to be more successful. Every one emulates successful people to be successful. With this, she motivates audience to read.

Lastly Gioia relates to civil success. Ever since there was severe decline in reading,  people are unable to comprehend and appreciate important things such as the American Democracy. Gioia states, “our nation becomes less informed, active, and independent minded”. These civil liberty are the reason why we are free, prosperous and ultimately happy as a society. These qualities are something that we “cannot afford to lose". With this, Gioia hopes the audience realizes that to continue enjoying these we need to start reading.

In conclusion, Dana Gioia convinces his audience to be literate by helping you be more artistic, helping you become successful, and helping you enjoy civil rights. With this, Gioia hopes that his audience starts to read more so they can live a more literate and understanding life.
