Zadie Smith

On June 12, 2012, Zadie Smith writes an article addressing the closing of public libraries. In her article, "The North West London Blues," Smith tries to convince her audience that public libraries should stay open. She does this by appealing to variety of people, reminding people how rare these special environments are, and by appealing to nostalgia.

First of all, Smith appeals to a variety of people. Libraries can have the following amenities at varying degrees: books, microfilms, digitized material, a cafe in the basement, or a market out front. She argues that these things are meant for different types of people. For example, some sections of the libraries are primarily for children. They have many DVD's and picture books to help with early year development. Other parts cater towards college students. This section offer peaceful and quiet setting. Then there is the section of the libraries for the general public. This allow for get-together's and for social interaction. They make a great social environment.

Secondly, Smith reminds people, how rare and special these types of environments are. The library is always very calm. This fosters peace and relaxed exchanges.  It helps people focus, read, and study. He also argues how this type of setting can never be recreated online. Although the internet may have books, it doesn't have the social experience libraries provide.

Lastly, Smith appeals to nostalgia. She talks about how many libraries are closing down due to the lack of money. Smith argues that the government shouldn't worry about money when sponsoring libraries. Libraries are about a free place to be with a friendly social environment. She argues that, if we get rid of libraries, what makes us any different from robots? We are humans, and we interact with one another, and these libraries are a significant part of our social reality. Loss of that would be significant. The government should acknowledge this.

In conclusion, Smith persuades her audience to keep libraries open to cater needs of all sections of society, to create a better environment for focus and peace, and by relating libraries to an important part of our life today.
